The story
The wind made the blue shutters of the small stone house rattle. The sky was darkening, dropping pellets of ice onto the clayey soil of the countryside. Fear was gradually taking hold of the inhabitants. There had been no storm of this magnitude in 10 years. Hardly recovered from the ashes of the past, the nightmare was beginning again. There hadn't been a storm of this magnitude in 10 years. They hadn't yet recovered from the ashes of the past when the nightmare started again. Night had fallen, which only added to the apocalyptic atmosphere. Everyone barricaded themselves as best they could, with whatever means they had at hand. Eva had stocked up on canned goods just in case. She wasn't a survivalist, but she remembered the storm of '99. It had been a close call for her parents and her to have perished last time. The toll of the missing was appalling, a total wasteland. Today, the stakes are different, it is Eva who has offspring to protect. She understands better what her parents felt back then. She was deeply moved by the innocent yet fearful gaze her twins Katie and Coket cast upon her, clinging tightly to her. She would have liked to reassure them, to tell them that everything would be fine. But how could she, facing this storm that dictates its own laws! Mom, I'm scared! Katie had cried out, those were the last words Eva heard before plunging into total chaos. Where am I? one could hear What happened? The children, where are my children? Eva was regaining consciousness. She was hooked up to machines, lying on a hospital bed. A beeping sound returned at regular intervals. A nurse noticed her awakening and went to fetch a doctor. 10 days had elapsed since the storm.
